Oizon: Château de la Verrerie, church and paths

A village within Stewart history

Oizon formed part of the Aubigny lordship granted to John Stewart of Darnley in the fifteenth century. That Auld Alliance connection gives historical continuity to a route from Aubigny-sur-Nère. In the village, Saint-Martial church, the washhouse and local streets make a freely accessible stop. The tourist office’s current Oizon guide also identifies a botanical and heritage trail and a communal pond.

Begin in the centre before taking a marked route. A communal pond is not automatically a beach or a place for unregulated fishing, so read signs and confirm permissions. Do not use an old trail description as proof that every section remains open. Download a recent route and account for hunting, weather and forestry work.

Plan La Verrerie separately

Château de la Verrerie, built in the late fifteenth century and developed during the Renaissance, stands in an extensive private estate. Its architecture, lake and associations with the Stewart and de Vogüé families explain its importance. Depending on the period, the property may offer tours, dining, events or accommodation, but none should be assumed available. Check the Château de la Verrerie website and the precise conditions for your date.

A booking in one part of the estate does not grant access to every other area. Follow the stated arrival point, time and permitted spaces. Without a reservation, do not leave the public road in search of a better photograph. A gateway or drive is not an invitation to enter.

Build a useful half-day

Allow an hour for the village, then add the true duration of a trail or confirmed Verrerie activity. An Aubigny–Oizon drive makes sense as a Stewart-themed route; a walk is better given a half-day and a clearly defined circuit.

Locate the centre in Google Maps or OpenStreetMap. Keep the château’s exact address separate from the village pin so that navigation does not send you towards a service entrance or private lane.
