Ennordres: church, pond and the Sente Verte

Begin at the centre

Ennordres sits among forest, ponds and farmland. Listed Saint-Martin church is its principal built landmark. The tourist office’s current Ennordres introduction also identifies Saint-Georges chapel, Arrachis pond and the former washhouse. Start by viewing these places from public streets and paths; a closed door, gate or fence should end any attempt to go farther.

The village and hamlets retain examples of rural building, particularly around Le Gué de la Pierre. Alain-Fournier’s father once taught there, connecting the area with its neighbouring literary landscape without making it an open-air museum. Several residences and châteaux in the commune are private. They belong in the historical context, but their courtyards, parks and interiors must not be promised to visitors.

Two routes that give the stop a purpose

The Sente Verte partly follows a former railway and joins Ennordres heritage with Aubigny, Ivoy and La Chapelle-d’Angillon. The full route is substantial, so select a section or arrange a realistic return for your mode of travel. A disused railway alignment can cross several types of land; follow current waymarks rather than merely tracing the line on a map.

Another official circuit links Ennordres with Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre, passing the Petite Sauldre, Arrachis and the Tourbière des Landes. It combines built village heritage with a sensitive natural habitat. Check the latest route and remain on managed access near the peatland.

A realistic programme

Allow about an hour for the centre and landmarks that require no appointment, then a half-day for a proper circuit. The pond is a landscape feature, not evidence of permitted swimming or fishing. Verify current rules and facilities before planning either activity.

Locate Ennordres in Google Maps or OpenStreetMap. Carry the route offline, avoid damaging verges when parking and keep a margin before nightfall.

There may be no convenient food stop at the moment you arrive. Confirm opening times in a larger nearby centre or carry a simple picnic, taking every wrapper away with you.
